You are always on.

Date February 3, 2009

So a couple things from the media that have caused me to have some reflection.

First off, Michael Phelps.  So by now, you have heard there is a picture of him at a University of South Carolina party smoking weed.  It is on Facebook or somewhere on the internet if you wanted to find it.  Basically, he screwed up, is someone pretty high profile and he went to South Carolina.  (That is a joke people!  The deal is the weed.)

Second, Christian Bale evidently went off on a guy on the set of the new Terminator movie.  I don’t work movie sets but from what I hear, when something is being shot, everyone stays where they are and does so as to not distract the actors in the scene.  Evidently some guy walked through a scene and Bale, notoriously intense about his acting, re: The Machinist, just lost it and some sound guy thought it would be fun to release it to the public.  (The audio is very intense and very full of words you should not use, so if you go listening, I warned you.)

Here is the thought for us in ministry: you are always on.  Sure, no one is browsing my Facebook shots to embarass me (I don’t think…though I know of one youth worker fired for his Facebook comments) and no one is taking audio of our conversations and releasing it to the whole world (at least not until I get my podcasting act together.)  But, people are watching and taking notes and learning.  That thing that I say in the moment of extreme exhaustion and frustration with a kid, he will remember that.  But he will also remember that when I say no job is too dirty for us on a mission trip and I am the first one into the slimy spectic tank hole.  Our life is teaching lessons as much as our words are.  So pay attention, because other people are too.
